Knowledge is Might

There are two instances that I would like to share here -

I was once called at a reputed hotel school in Western India to be a part of a panel to judge a culinary competition. I went there with high expectations, hoping to find some good talent, as this was a zonal level competition and participants were competing to qualify for national level. However it did not turn out to be such, and the presentations were very mediocre. I could see that the entire panel (which along with me consisted of a culinary trainer, a pastry Chef and an Executive Chef - all from reputed hotel brands from the industry) was disappointed to see the presentation of food and what majorly lacked among the participants was knowledge. The basic rules of culinary were not followed and participants did not know the standard recipes. What was presented was wrong, and the participants were trying to sell it under the name of innovation. In my address to the students at the end of the event, I took the liberty to express my disappointment and did mention that, innovation should be used to enhance the presentation of ones knowledge and not as a tool to hide the lack of it (knowledge)

The second instance was a recent one in one of the companies I was working for. We were working on a project, and were not really doing great on it.I was majorly getting stuck on receiving inputs from my managers working in operations, as they were all busy. This was one of those times when our financial numbers were not looking really great and we were advised to keep our costs low. Further while I was sitting in my office trying to figure out how to sort this project out, I received a call from the Personnel Manager asking me to hold on to the recruitment's for the month and push as many to the following month to keep payroll for the month under control. In a scenario like this, what left me wondering was what was keeping the operations managers busy. They were all surely not working on improving the business (that was not their prime job), but the fact was, that they were indeed busy.

I find both these instances inter related and personally feel that it is an outcome of lack of knowledge. The first instance with this reference is self explanatory. In the second one what I observed is managers are continuously busy in developing new systems to tackle every problem, without trying to understand what originally exists in the organization and how the same system can further be developed. It is important that as managers we remain patient and spend time in gaining knowledge of the existing technology or systems and then brain storm on further improving it (or if need arises, eliminating it and replacing it with a new one)

The interrelation I found here is, as students in management schools we do not train our selves in improving our knowledge, but concentrate on grades, which unfortunately as seen here doesn't serve us well as professionals. The worst part is that we get into a habit of going easy on knowledge even as professionals (concentrating more on work) while the fact as we all know is, at every stage of our career - Knowledge is Might.

In a nut shell what I feel is to be successful at what we are doing (whether it is a job or a business that we are running) and to do justice to what we are getting paid for - acquiring, upgrading and updating our knowledge is very important, for 'Knowledge is Might'

नाहीतरी आता २६ जानेवारी येतेच आहे... उगीच जोरजोरात देशभक्ति वर गाणी लाउन ध्वनिप्रदूषण वाढवण्यापेक्षा निदान एकदा ची ही घोषणा करून काय्द्यातला हा फेरबदल कायदेशीर करून टाका

             संस्कृतिचं माहेरघर असणार्या पुण्याची पूर्ति लाज काढण्याच भाग्य आज राज्यकर्त्यांना लाभलं आणी त्या संधीचं त्यांनी अक्षरशः सोनं केल. छत्रपतीनचा आत्मा आज स्वर्गात सुखावला असेल. आणि त्याहून ,धन्याच्या बगेतला एक आम्बा न विचरता घेतला म्हणून स्वताहाला अपराधी समजणार्या आणी आपल्या कर्तुत्वाने त्या जाणत्या राजाचा गुरु होउन या स्वराज्यची नीव ज्यानी स्थापिली  त्या दादोजी कोंदेवांचा तर ऊर आज आनंदाने भरून आला असेल. ह्या साठीच तर छत्रपतीनी प्राणाची आहुति वाहून हे राष्ट्र निर्मिले.
               ह्या राज्यात स्त्रीयांचा बलात्कार करणे हेच पुरुशार्थाचे प्रतीक आहे. गरिबाना लुबाडणे,महागाई वाढवणे ह्या सारख्या प्रश्नांवर  जर सरकार लक्ष्य देत बसली तर दंगली कश्या करायच्या, कसाबची खातर काशी ठेवायची, अतिरेकी संघटनांना काही कमी तर पडत नाही ह्या कड़े लक्ष्य कोण देणार.
              दररोज पेपर उघडल्यावर बेशिष्त वहातुकी मुले  जीव गमावलेले लोक दिसतात, पुण्यात रिक्शे वल्यान्ची मनमानी दिसते, लैंगीक अत्याचाराला बळी पडलेल्या स्त्रियाच नाही तर लहान लहान मुली सुधा.....कधी रस्त्यात चुकून सिग्नल मोडला तर आप्ल्याय इतकी हिडीस वागणूक मिळेल की जसा काही आपण मोठा गुन्हा केला आहे. पोलिसांची खाऊगिरी, रिक्शावाल्यांची मनमानी, प्रत्येक गल्लीतल्या दादाची दादागिरी आणि भाईची भाईगिरी. ह्या सगळ्या प्रश्नांपुढे खरच का ददोजिंचा पुतला हलवणे इतका गंभीर प्रश्न आहे.
                 पुन्हा एकदा माजा आज प्रश्न आहे राज ठाकरेना, पुतला हलवन्या विरुध आंदोलन करण्यापेक्षा आपण कांदा स्वस्त करण्यासाठी आंदोलन करू शकतो का? किंवा हिन्जवडी आय टी पार्क मधे काही दिवसां पूर्वी जे बलात्कार जाले त्या दोशिंच काय जाला हे आपण शोधून काढू शकतो का?
                 समाजात सन्मानानं जगण्याचा अधिकार छत्रपतींनी स्त्रयांना दिला होता. तो हक्क आणि ते स्वत्र्यंत आपण त्यांना परत मिल्वुन देऊ शकू का? या पवित्र भूमीत जिथे हौतात्म्यांचं रक्त या मातीत आज ही रोज मिसलतय त्या मातील थुंकणाय्रांना आपण ज्होंडपुन काढू शकतो का?
                    हे प्रश्न खरंतर खुपच छोटे आहेत आणि यात प्रोफिताबिलिटी पण आजिबात्च नाही. त्यामुले अर्थातच उत्तराची अपेक्षा नाही....................................!!!!!!!

पुण्यातील प्रसिद्ध लाल महालात असलेला दादोजी कोंडदेव यांचा पुतळा पुणे महापालिकेने आज पहाटे शेकडो पोलिसांच्या कडेकोट बंदोबस्तात हलविल्याने पुण्यात आज एकच हल्लकल्लोळ उडाला. या घटनेच्या निषेधार्थ शिवसेना-भाजप-मनसे यांनी महापालिका सभागृहात मानदंड आणि मानाच्या खुच्र्याची तोडफोड करीत तसेच अक्षरश: दिसेल त्या वस्तूची नासधूस करीत काढला.

A lot of people (ofcource who know me) know my love for the magical Potter series. There was a time when Harry potter was my life and my dream was to marry Emma Watson ( Hermoine ofcource). In my collage days I turned down so many girls, sincerely hoping I am gonna meet Emma on my way to or back from collage and the first thing I ask her  is...' Emma will you marry me'. If I would not have been that crazy I would have not been single while I am writing this blog.....

But if that was a kind of love I had for the magical series , I would say its nothing to what I feel about JK Rowling today after hearing this speech. (Specially when I am (I feel) sailing in a somewhat similar ship at this time) (About the same age what Joe was at that time....) OH no I dont dare to comapre myself to her.

But if there is a speech which can be inspiring , I have heard it today. Who in the world can list down the benefits of failure than a mother who once had no money to buy toys for her kids, and today is richer than the Queen. I remember Joe telling once when she had visited a friends housewarming party and the friend showed her the Kids room which was so full of toys. All Joe could see at the back of her mind was a shoe box in her house which could accomodate all the toys her kid had. 

Its so hard to believe that its the  true face behind Harry Potter .... How can a person who has suffered so much present the world with a gift as wonderful as that ....... and her speech up there answers my questions... her dedication and love to write novels..... I have never heard a speech which changes the moods of the listners so rapidly and makes one think hard... surely joe we are ofcource gonna remember that speech for a long long long long time...... And just one thing.... please say you lied that you graduated 21 years back, or people would feel you graduated at the age of 1..... cheers...

A point I just realised.... arond an hour after i wrote this post and waited while the video is getting uploaded..... Its the last saturday of July today and tommorow happens to be the first Sunday of August... friendship day ofcource.... listen to Joe when she speaks about friends..... (at the very end of the speech) I wish you all a great frndship day and may you all find kind of friends joe met and had them sitting besides her on her graduation day... and most importantly have them till date ....that is (because she says) even 21 years after her grad day....

Ajmal Qasab

Its indeed incredeble to see mumbai celebrating with fireworks when Court declared Ajmal Qasab guilty od the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Unfortunately it has taken more than a year for the court to declare him guilty and why has it taken so long is a question which remains unanswered, or probably its a question never asked.It is such a pain to see a terrorist like Qasab being treated like a celebrrity. The newspaper quoting what he sain when he was brought to the court, or he demanding for newspapers or wanting biryani for lunch. Unfortunately we keep forgeting that he is a terrorist who has killed our innocent country men, he is in the eyes of the citizens of this country a person who does not have a right to be alive (please note I have clearly said in the eyes of the citizens of this country and not in the eyes of the country which may also include the countrys government, political leaders and the amazing justice system prevailing  here) forget what he wants to read or what he wants to eat.

The Justice system here will decide on Qasabs fate today, but the question is why was he kept alive for such  a long time and what proofs were we waiting to see. Whatever decision will be taken on Qasabs fate tommorow is the next question, but the government of this country has hurt the feelings of  the people who have laid their lives (probably the government thinks that even the feelings of those who laid their lives are dead) , of their families, of the country men and the government is absolutely defeted in winning the trust of the subjects of the nation when it comes to Ajmal Qasab.

When Pakistan has behaved this way with our soldiers who have not even fought for wrong causes but only for something that was always ours, why have we made Qasab a celebrity. India will never behave even with its enemies the way Pakistan has behaved, I thing that is a difference which should and will  always remain between the two nations, but surely the Government has gone an extra mile in Qasabs case. And like Lt Col S S Hasabnis says yes we all feel sorry for the government which is so weak.

Whether it is Qasab or the maoist attack killing more than 70 CRPF soldiers,(Dantewada in Chhattisgarh on 06th April 2010) we dont need a home minister who accepts moral responsibility and resigns but we need a home minister who will take  action against those who are responsible for this. 

If Qasab is kept alive after this and  a few years down the line if an Indian Aircraft get Hijacked keeping the passangers hostage like the IC-814 on 24th December 1999 in Kandhar, demanding the release of Ajmal Qasab it sould not come out as a surprise for the Indians and the government should rather be proud that the planning in this sector is atleast successful.

A friend called David

आपण सगळएच जण आपापल्या आयुष्यात भरपूर काही सहन करत असतो. मी पण टाइम एंड अगेन मला माझ्या  देवाने जे जे वाढून दीले ते आनंदाने ग्रहण केले. अर्थात मला बर्याच वेळा श्रीखंड पुरी, पुरणपोली, किन्व्हा फॉर द्याट  मैटर  मी शाकाहारी असल्याने सुरमई, पापलेट ची तुकडी किन्व्हा कोलंबि चा कलावण , असच काही काही वाढून मिळत राहिल आहे. आता रक्त शुद्ध ठेवायच  म्हणजे कधी तरी कारल्याची भाजी खाविच लागणार, आम्बट असलं  तरी लोणचं पानात पाहिजेच. झणझणीत  तर झणझणीत ठेचा हवाच .... दोडका , मुळ1 , आणि बूळबूलीत भेंडी सुद्धा हवीच... हेच परिपूर्ण भोजन आहे ... जे आपल्याला आरोग्य देत आणि आपली प्रतिकार शक्ति वाढवतं . तसच आपल्या जीवनरूपी ताटात  सुख दुखांच्या रुपाने हे सगले पदार्थ वाढलेले असतात. एकवेळ जेवणाच्या ताटातले  एखादे पदार्थ आपण सोडून उठू शकतो पण आयुष्याच्या ................ हे आयुष्यातले सगले जिन्नस आनंदानेच ग्रहण करावेच  लागतात.

तेव्हा मी सुधा माझ्या देवाने   मला दिलेल्या आयुष्यावर खुप खुश आहे, आणि कधी कुठल्याही गोष्टीची तक्रार  केली नाही, आणि त्याच्या मागचं एक कारण हे ही आहे ..... के मज़ा माझ्या  देवावर आणि स्वत:वर  विश्वास आहे. आलेली प्रत्येक  वेळ सरणार आहे अणि काळ बदलणार आहे हे सत्य मला माहीत आहे, त्यामुले मी नेहमीच समाधानी असतो.

मात्र गेल्या काही दिवसात मला एक गोष्टीचा अतिशय कंटाळ| आला आहे आणि मी देवाकडे प्रार्थना करतो की देवा आता बास. आणि ती गोष्ट म्हणजे मैत्री. मला काधीच चांगले मित्र मिळ|ले नाही किन्व्हा टाली कधी एक हाताने वाजत नाही तसं मी कधी चांगला मित्र होऊ शकलो नाही. सतत्याने  प्रयत्न करून ही मझे  मित्र फार टिकत नाहीत. मी एखाद्या मैत्रीमधे खुप गुंतून जातो, पण आणि कदाचीत म्हणूनच समोरच्याच्या परस्नल स्पेस मधे माझी  मैत्री इनटरफीयर करत असेल. किन्व्हा सातत्याने प्रयत्न हे मैत्रीत करावे लगत नाहीत. यात देखिल काही मेख असेल. पण ते काही असो, माझ्या   साठी मैत्री ही खुप महत्व ठेवते आणि प्रत्येक वेळला माझ्या  मैत्रीशी मै प्रमाणीक राहिलो आहे आणि तरीही मला या मार्गावर खुप दुखच मिळ|लं  आहे. पण म्हणून काही माझी मैत्री या संकल्पनेवरची श्रद्धा कमी होत नाही आणि प्रत्येक वेळेला मी तितकाच त्या भोवर्यात अडकत जातो. आणि म्हणुनच मी हल्ली देवाकडे प्रार्थना करत होतो की आता बास. मला अश्या लोकांशी भेटवुच नकोस ज्यांना मैत्री ची जाण नसेल, किन्व्हा मला हे तरी शिकव की मैत्री करून सुद्धा स्वार्थी कस रहिचं. (खरं तर सध्या मी पुण्यात आहे, त्यामुले स्वार्थी कस रहिचं हे शिकायला मला देवाची काही गरज नाही, रादर देवाला ते ट्रेनींग पुणं देऊ शकत) . मी विचार करत राहिलो की मला नेहमी असेच का भेटले.... का मैत्रीमध्ये आता जेन्यूनीटी राहिलीच  नाहीये ? लतादिदिंच पेज थ्री मधील कितने अजीब रिश्ते हैं यहाँ पे  हे गाण आता पेज थ्री पुरता मर्यादीत न रहता आपल्या प्रत्येकाच्या आयुष्यात आपण ते अनुभवत आहोत, आणि हा विचार करत असतानाच मला अचानक डेव्हीड़ आठवला आणि क्षणात जाणीव झाली की नाही नाही देवाने आपल्याला गरज होती तेव्हा खरच खुप चांगले मित्र दीले. काय झालं असतं जर त्या रात्री डेव्हीड़ नास्ता तर.

 मी अमेरिकेत असताना आम्ही फ्लूएनव्हाइड़नर च्या केनटकी  फ्राईड़ चिकन (के एफ सी ) साठी काम करत होतो. मी, अनिकेत, चिनार.मयूरा, ईक्राम हे या कथेतील मुख्या सूत्रधार. अनिकेत ...कॉलेज सोडून आज तीन वर्ष होत आली तरी आज ही अनिकेत बद्दल कोणाला सांगायचा झाला तर my extended sibling......असंच मी आज ही सांगतो. कधी त्याच्या बद्दल एखद्या नवख्या माणसाशी  देखिल बोलत असलो की तो व्यक्ति म्हणते yes i know him .. you had mentioned him last time we spoke....तेव्हा अनिकेत आणि मी एकाच घरात राहत होतो. एकदा शुक्रवारी रात्री के एफ सी मधे अतिशय गर्दी होती. चिनार आणि मयूरा ची सूटी होती , मी आणि इकराम समोर कैश वर तर अनिकेत काही ईंडोनएशीयन मुलांबरोबर कीचन मध्ये काम करत होता. सात सवासात च्या दरम्यान खाली मान घालून तो अचानक बाहेर आला. आणि काही न बोलता थेट बाहेर गेला. मी त्याला काम करता करताच what happned म्हणून विचरल पण काही न बोलता तो थेट बाहेर गेला. त्याचा उज्वा हात मात्र त्याने डाव्या हातात घट्ट पकडला होता.. ते मी पहिला आणि त्याच्या मागोमाग बेथ ही शिफ्ट मेनेजर सुद्धा
घाईघाईने बाहेर गेली. काही तरी गड़बड़ आहे हे मला काळलं होतं पण  बेथ आणी अनिकेत दोघं ही निघून गेल्यावर मी विचारणार कोणाला. तेवढ्यात कीचन मधला एक ईंडोनएशीयन मुलगा बाहेर आला आणि त्याने मला सांगीतल hey  nick your brother has met with an accident... he happned to put his hand into the fryer.. its burnt upto the elbow....
इतक्य पीक अवर ला हा अपघात झाला होता. ऑपरेशन चालू ठेवणं आवश्यक होतं तितकच आवश्यक होतं अनिकेत ला दवाखान्यात नेण . आणि मला त्याच्या बरोबर जायचं होतं. बेथ अनिकेतला घेउन कुठे गेली मला माहीत नव्हतं , आत मध्ये ती  ईंडोनएशीयन मुलं त्यांच्या स्थानीक भाषेत काही अपघाताविशयी  काही बोलत होती. समोरून ओर्ड़ेर्स पडत होत्या आणी मला काही सुचत नव्ह्त. मी गर्दीपासून तोंड फिरवल आणी डोळे पुसले. माझ्या बरोबर असणारा इकराम .. वास्तविक याचा आणि माझा कधी विशेष पटलं नाही. कारण तो काम करत नसे. आणी ज्यांना काम करायला आवडत नाही अश्या लोकांचा मला राग आहे. मात्र हां इकराम माझ्या जवाल आला आणि मला म्हणाला अरे निखिल तू कशाला कलजी करतो. आपण दोघ पटापट क्लोसिंग करू आणि मग तू सरळ चीरोकी इंडियन हॉस्पिटलला जा. आम्ही राहत होतो त्या गावातील सार्वजनीक  वाहतूक व्यवस्था रात्री बार वाजता बंद होत असे. तेव्हा इकराम असा म्हान्ल्यावर मला जरा बरं वाटल , साडे अकरा पर्यंत क्लोसिंग होईल दोघान्ने केलं तर. मी भराभर काम करत राहिलो. थोड्या वेळेत बेथ आली तीने मला अपघाताबद्दल म्हणाली ..dont worry, david has taken aniket to the hospital and he is going to call mee soon. रात्री दहा वाजता आम्ही स्टोर बंद केल. मी भराभर क्लोसिंग च्या तयारीला लागलो. सवा दहा झाले तरी ईक्राम दिसे ना म्हणून मी बेथ ला विचारलं तर ती म्हणाली ikram had some urgent work and has left for the day. मी चाटच पडलो. अश्या परीस्थीतीत संपूर्ण क्लोसिंग माझ्या एकट्यावर सोडून हा पलून गेला होता. वास्तविक  लोबी आणि कैश क्लोसिंग हे दोन जणामध्ये  सुद्धा होणारं काम नव्ह्त, ते तो माझ्या एक्त्यावर सोडून निघून गेला होता. मी डोळ्यातील आश्रू आवरत पुन्हा काम चालू केलं . इतक्यात डेव्हीड़ आला. मी काही विचरायच्या  आतच हात वर करत  तो म्हणाला ....nothing to worry everything is fine. hopital has relesed him and I have dropped him home. त्या नंतर डेव्हीड़ने मला क्लोसिंग मधे मदत केली. झालेल्या प्रकारामुले बेथ ला  खुपच फोल्लो अप करावे लागत होते, साडेबारा वाजून गेले तरी बेथ , मी आणि डेव्हीड़ क्लोसिंग करत होतो. नंतर बेथच कैश क्लोसिंग झाल्यावर तीने देखील आम्हाला मदत केली आणि साधारण रात्री दीडच्या सुमारास बेथ आणि डेव्हीड़ने मला त्यांच्या गाडीतून घरी सोडल.
